Martan Mann
Music Educator, Jazz Musician, Composer and Author

Martan Mann has performed extensively in clubs and concerts throughout Northern California and Hawaii. He performed as jazz pianist for 25 years at San Jose’s former jazz club, The Garden City. Performances include performing duos with George Young and Dmitri Matheny; with Martan Mann & Mannkind (contemporary jazz band); The Martan Mann Trio; and The Jazzical 6 (Dixieland Band). Martan is also a sought-after accompanist for many jazz vocalists, such as:  Cathy Segal-Garcia, Gail Dobson, Julie Kelly, Pamela Polland, Sandra Marlowe, Nate Pruitt, Mary Jenson, Shelley Burns, Michelle Rivard, Deborah Winters and many, many more.

Has recorded as a sideman on many, many jazz recordings. *Current activities include: Clazzical Jazz Lecture/Performance Series; Developing a new contemporary jazz CD with the Martan Mann Trio; developing a concert tour with Martan Mann & Mannkind and the Martan Mann Trio; writing his fourth book on improvisation.

His books include “Jazz Improvisation for the Classical Pianist” (published for 14 years by Music Sales Corp.), “New Age Improvisation for the Classical Pianist” (originally published by Music Sales Corp.) and “Improvising Blues Piano” (currently in publication for 20 years by Music Sales Corp.). *Musical director of “The Cole Porter Revue” and “Gershwin,Gershwin” at the Capitola Theater in Capitola, CA. Musical director for “How to handle a woman” at the Vault in Hollister.  Musical director of “The Last of the Red Hot Mama’s”, featuring Maria Muldaur.

*Teaching piano for 40 years.  Currently teaching privately at his home in Boulder Creek and in Mountain View, California. Also, taught at the San Jose Jazz Camp and the Buchser Jazz Camp in San Jose.  Currently, he is an adjudicator for the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.  Martan is an adjunct pianist for Cabrillo College. *On the board of directors for the Jazz Society of Santa Cruz. Recently on the Board of Directors for the Steinway Society The Bay Area.  Was Improvisation Director for the Music Teacher’s Association of California for three years.
