Creating the Jazz Waltz Groove – Ballad Style:
- I created a tune called the Jazz Waltz Tune. It doesn’t have melody.
- Playing it in Ballad Style allows you time to think of harmonies, voicings, subs, melodies. If you play fast, usually the left hand is in closed position harmonies. But, in Ballad Style, you can explore voicings in both hands.
- When playing Ballad Style – learn chord structures and practice playing structures up and down the scale.
- To find good voicings, consider playing a “core” chord in the left hand and add in tones (by your ear) in the right hand.
- Also, explore using lots of fourths and seconds in your voicings. Play sounds that you like.
- For instance, consider mode alternatives, such as F Major Scale or F Lydian Mode over an F Maj7 chord.
- Practice comping by using modal voicings.
