Developing the Jazz Waltz Groove with Modal Soloing:

  1. Practice “Stop on the Chord”.  Take each chord through the tune and explore it fully.   Play voicings all over the piano.
  2. When you comp . . . think of the top note of the comping chords as a melody note.
  3. Play the tune using modal playing.  Remember all licks move forward.  Play all the rhythmic values in the Continuous Melody Exercise.

  1. Put on the metronome and play the Jazz Waltz Groove through the tune.
  2. Play the left hand only.  You can leave out some beats.
  3. Create a specific rhythm for a melodic figure.  Use that rhythm to play melodies through the tune.  Always think forward and end on the first beat of the measure.

Develop Bass Lines for the Jazz Waltz Tune:

  1. Most important . . . listen to bass players.   Bass players flow through chords.  They set up the groove.
  2. Practice the Jazz Waltz Tune as a bass player, playing from chord to chord.  How many ways can you move from any chord to the following chord?
  3. Comp in the right hand while slowly playing bass lines in the left hand.
  4. Put the metronome on about 110.  Play bass lines in the left hand and comp in the right hand through the tune.
  5. If you have Band in a Box – listen to just the bass (and drums) play through the tune.  Listen to all the slight inflections.

Creating the Jazz Waltz Groove – Ballad Style:

  1. I created a tune called the Jazz Waltz Tune.  It doesn’t have melody.
  2. Playing it in Ballad Style allows you time to think of harmonies, voicings, subs, melodies.  If you play fast, usually the left hand is in closed position harmonies.  But, in Ballad Style, you can explore voicings in both hands.
  3. When playing Ballad Style – learn chord structures and practice playing structures up and down the scale.
  4. To find good voicings, consider playing a “core” chord in the left hand and add in tones (by your ear) in the right hand.
  5. Also, explore using lots of fourths and seconds in your voicings.  Play sounds that you like.
  6. For instance, consider mode alternatives, such as F Major Scale or F Lydian Mode over an F Maj7 chord.
  7. Practice comping by using modal voicings.
