It’s time now to apply the prior study of II V Lead-in to the Alt Chord.  Very simply . . . just play a II V before any Alt Chord.

I suggest that you begin by playing all the chords (basic and subs) in all their inversions.

Play the Turnaround using the 9 13,  starting in one “inversion” or position.  Play all the chords in the “basic” Turnaround (I VI II V) going from chord to chord using the closest position of the chord.

Play the Turnaround using the 9 13, using all the subs.  This teaches you ALL the 9 13 chords in ALL inversions.

In the last lesson, I presented the idea that every chord can be preceded by it’s V7 dominant.  This time we are taking this one step further.  Instead of only using the V7 . . . we are using the IIm V7 Progression before any chord.  This can be used as a II V before the basic Turnaround chords (I VI II V).  So in the key of C . . . you can place a bm7 to E7 before the A7 (VI chord).  Also, you can play a II V to the Tritone of the V chord.  That would be Fm7 to Bb7.  (Remember:  Bb7 is the Tritone Sub of E7)

You can also play II Vs before all the Tritone Subs of the Turnaround.

Continuing on with the Turnaround Tritone Sub Exercise:   Start with the III7 chord.  We can do this because it is the V7 of the II chord.  For instance in C:  C becomes E7.  E7 is the V7 of A7 (which is the V7 of D7 – which is the V7 of G7).  This is the Cycle of Fourths.

Once you have mastered playing all the Tritone Subs from E7 . . . then substitute a tritone bVII (Bb7) for the E7 and continue the exercise from there.  Now you have the complete exercise.

Steps for learning the BN Turnaround with Tritone Subs:

  1. Study the Dominant 7th with only a 3 and b7.  Notice that when you play a 3 and 7 and move the root a tritone away . . . it reverses the 3 & 7 (to 7 & 3).  Now, you have two choices when playing the Turnaround:  the “normal” chord . . . or the Tritone Sub.
  2. Now you can substitute the III chord for the I chord (that sets up a Cycle of Fourths).  Explore all the Tritone Subs.
  3. Now, you can substitute the bVII chord for the III chord.  Explore all the Tritone Subs.
  4. Now play the above with the BN Turnaround Groove while randomly choosing either the “normal” chord or the Tritone Sub.

If we are playing a Turnaround using the 9 13 chords, you can also apply all the II V Lead-ins.  For instance:  if you are moving from C to A7 . . . you can play a 1/2 step above the A7 (you can also play the V7 of the A7, if you want).  The 1/2 step above would be Fm9 to Bb9,13.  This is the Basic I VI II V Turnaround.

Of course you can apply this to all the subs.  For instance:  If you are playing from C to Eb7 . . . you can play 1/2 step above the Eb7 (bm7 to E7).  Practice all the Turnaround Subs in this way.
